After 31 January 2027, BT will no longer support analogue phone lines. Businesses that haven't migrated will lose their phone service.

The End of Analogue Phone Lines

The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is the UK's traditional copper wire phone infrastructure. It's been around since the 1800s. BT has confirmed it will be fully decommissioned by January 2027.

This also affects ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) lines — commonly used for business broadband, multi-line phone systems, and fax machines. All of it goes.

The replacement is VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) — calls made over a standard broadband connection, which is faster, cheaper, and far more flexible.

⚠ Being Switched Off

PSTN — traditional analogue phone lines
ISDN2 / ISDN30 — digital lines for businesses
WLR — wholesale line rental
Fax lines over analogue

✓ The Replacement

VoIP — calls over broadband
SIP Trunking — business-grade internet calling
Microsoft Teams Calling — cloud phone system
Hosted / Cloud PBX — full phone system online

Also Affected

Alarm systems, door entry systems, CCTV lines, PDQ/card payment terminals, and lift emergency phones that run over analogue lines will also need updating.

The Switch-Off Timeline

Sept 2023
Complete

New PSTN/ISDN sales stopped

BT stopped selling new PSTN and ISDN lines. Businesses can no longer add new analogue lines.

2025 – 2026
Happening Now

Rolling area switch-offs underway

Openreach is switching off exchanges across the UK in waves. Some areas are already on VoIP-only infrastructure. Check now — your area may be next.

Jan 2027
Final Deadline

Full national switch-off

All remaining analogue lines go dark. Any business still on PSTN or ISDN after this date will lose their phone service entirely, with no fallback.

Is Your Business at Risk?

If your business uses any of the following, you need to act before the deadline. The good news is migration is straightforward — and often saves money.

📞

Traditional Phone Lines

Any phone that plugs into a BT wall socket and runs over a copper line — home office, reception desk, or office handset.

🖨

Fax Machines

Fax still used in legal, medical, and financial sectors. These all run over analogue lines and will stop working.

💳

Card Payment Terminals

Some older PDQ/card terminals still dial over PSTN. If yours does, it'll stop processing payments after the switch-off.

🔔

Alarm Systems

Many burglar alarms, fire alarms, and monitored security systems use analogue lines to contact monitoring centres.

🏢

ISDN Business Lines

Office phone systems (PBX) using ISDN2 or ISDN30 connections for multiple lines will cease to function.

🛗

Lift Emergency Phones

Lift intercoms and emergency call points in commercial buildings commonly run over analogue lines.

⚠️

Don't wait until the last minute

Millions of UK businesses need to migrate. As 2027 approaches, installation lead times will grow and engineers will be booked out. Businesses that act now get better pricing, more choice, and a stress-free migration. Those that leave it late face higher costs and potential service disruption.

Vantage Makes Migration Simple

1

Free Audit

We review your current phone setup, internet connection, and any analogue-dependent systems to map out exactly what needs to change — and what doesn't.

2

Tailored Solution

We recommend the right solution for your size and budget — whether that's a simple VoIP swap, a full cloud phone system, or Microsoft Teams Calling.

3

Hassle-Free Migration

We handle everything — number porting, hardware, installation, and staff training. Minimal disruption to your business throughout.

4

Ongoing Support

We don't disappear after go-live. Vantage provides ongoing support so you're never left stuck with a phone system that isn't working.

5

Keep Your Numbers

We port your existing phone numbers to the new system — customers call the same number, nothing changes from their end.

6

Usually Save Money

VoIP typically costs less than PSTN/ISDN. Most businesses we migrate see a reduction in their monthly telecoms bill from day one.

Common Questions

Will my phone number change? +
No. Your existing phone numbers can be ported to the new VoIP system. Your customers will call the same number and nothing changes from their side.
Do I need faster broadband to use VoIP? +
VoIP uses surprisingly little bandwidth — around 100 Kbps per call. A standard broadband connection can handle many simultaneous calls with ease. We'll check your connection as part of our free audit.
What if my broadband goes down — do I lose my phones? +
This is a common concern. The solutions we recommend include failover options — such as calls diverting to mobiles automatically if your broadband drops — so your business stays reachable.
How long does migration take? +
For most small businesses, migration takes a few days from order to go-live. Larger or more complex setups may take 2–4 weeks. We work around your schedule to keep disruption to an absolute minimum.
Will it cost more than my current system? +
In most cases, no — VoIP is cheaper than PSTN and ISDN, often significantly so. You also gain features like call recording, auto-attendant, and mobile apps at no extra cost.
What about our alarm system / door entry / PDQ machine? +
These devices often need separate attention — some can be adapted, others need replacing. We'll flag any of these during the audit so nothing gets missed.
We already have a VoIP system — are we fine? +
Possibly, but it depends on whether you have any remaining PSTN or ISDN lines alongside it (e.g. as a backup, or for fax/alarms). Get in touch and we'll confirm you're fully covered.
